Decowell is a long established award winning company that specialises in restoration, conservation and design of painted surfaces and the decorative arts. We particularly specialise in works to historic interiors and easel paintings, which we believe require a specialist approach in line with conservation philosophy. The company also carries out new and reproduction works.

Based in Belfast, and established in 1995, Decowell works within both the private and public sector in Ireland and further afield, having developed an extensive portfolio of projects across Europe, America and the middle east. The company was formed by Ruth Bothwell, who trained at the renowned Van Der Kelen School of Decorative Arts in Belgium, and studied conservation of easel, wall and icon paintings at the London school of Picture and Frame Restoration. A professional team of fine artists and skilled conservators combine to make Decowell the long established and only professionally qualified team of decorative artists and conservators in Northern Ireland.

At Decowell, we pride ourselves on knowledge and professionalism, wth high regard for conservation principles underpinned by the use of best practice techniques in a wide variety of decorative finishes, including oil gilding, water gilding, marbling, wood graining, fresco painting, trompe l'oeil, and other decorative finishes. In addition, we specialise in the restoration and conservation of oil paintings, icons and frames. We advocate informed conservation, and interventions to historic interiors, objects and paintings are based on appropriate scientific analysis, detailed research and thorough recording, all carried out by appropriately qualified professionals.

The philosophy of the company is one of care, consideration and respect for the unique craftsmanship of previous generations. We pride ourselves on ensuring that each individual project will be sympathetically carried out in the best way using appropriately skilled artisans and materials. We continually strive to deliver a high level of service, based on understanding of client need, an appreciation of the unique characteristics and requirements of each project, informed intervention and delivery, and a desire to ensure the survival of our skilled and specialised craft for future generations.
